St. John's Ice Fountain

The St. John's Ice Fountain - built in 1891
In 1891 refrigeration, as we know it today, did not exist. So how could an "ice fountain" be possible? Read the story below and you will understand how architecture and function beautifully come together in this fountain. The fountain still exists today, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Cochran in 1891, but is in need of repair. The fountain and all its elements are intact, I am told. Wouldn't it be great to have this restored to its function and splendor of a bygone age?
At the bottom of the page are recent photos.

The fountain is in the lower left hand corner of this 1900 photo. Note the children enjoying a cool summer drink!
