To gain an understanding of what life was like in Yonkers during the Victorian Era (1837-1901), we must rely on first hand written accounts and interviews conducted long ago, since there is no one alive to day to ask.

Jacob Read, one of Yonkers oldest and respected citizens in the late 1800's describes life in Yonkers from 1829 through 1895 when the interview below was written.  He owned the Yonkers Sugar Refinery for 40 years before selling it in the early 1890's. Mr. Read died in Yonkers, January 1899.

As you view the photographs, many of which are described in this website, it will be apparent that Yonkers attracted the best, brightest and many of the wealthiest from New York City, its neighbor to the south. "The City of Gracious Living" it truly was!
